Tahiti
This mystical and mountainous island fringed by glorious white and black sand beaches is where you will find Papeete, French Polynesia's bustling capital, and its stylish shops and Le Marche (market).
Like Fletcher Christian who led the Mutiny on the Bounty in a bid to stay here, or artist Paul Gauguin who spent his life painting the extraordinary beauty of this island and its people, you will be captivated by the unique atmosphere of Tahiti.
Our favourite things to do in Papeete include dining at Les Roulettes, catering trucks that gather each evening on the wharf. Choose from bargain priced, but delicious meals including stir-fries, curries, roasted pig, pizza, crepes and the world's best vanilla ice-cream. The warm waters of Tahiti are one of the few places in the world where black pearls are cultured. Prices in Papeete shops range from $500 to $10,000 or more, though slightly flawed examples can be found for much less. Or hire a car and explore the tropical jungle interior and ancient valleys shrouded in tree ferns with stunning waterfalls, almost too perfect to be true.
